Substrate Preparation and Waterproofing
Tile in wet areas is only as good as the waterproofing behind it. Shower walls, shower floors, and tub surrounds require a properly installed waterproofing membrane before tile goes on. Skipping this step leads to moisture getting behind the tile, which causes mold, substrate deterioration, and eventually a full tear-out.
We use appropriate waterproofing systems for wet area work, including:
- Sheet-applied membranes for shower walls and floors
- Foam board substrates where applicable
- Correct slope-to-drain on shower floors
The substrate has to be right before any tile goes on. If what's there isn't adequate for the application, we address it first. Getting substrate and waterproofing correct is what makes tile in a bathroom renovation last, rather than becoming a problem within a few years.
Tile and Renovation Projects
Most of our tile work happens as part of a bathroom renovation or kitchen remodel. Running tile installation under the same contractor as the surrounding renovation keeps the sequence correct: substrate work, plumbing rough-in, and tile installation all happen in the right order.
We also handle tile as a standalone project. If you're renovating a shower but keeping the rest of the bathroom in place, or updating a kitchen backsplash independently, we handle that scope without requiring a full renovation.
Grout Selection and Maintenance
Grout choice affects both the look of a tile installation and the maintenance required over time. Larger grout joints read differently than tight joints. Sanded grout is appropriate for wider joints; unsanded grout for narrow ones. Epoxy grout is harder to work with during installation but significantly more stain-resistant than cement grout over time.
For shower floors and high-moisture areas, sealed grout isn't optional if you want it to hold up. We can walk through grout options as part of the material selection conversation so you're choosing based on what performs well in the application, not just what looks good in photos.
Tile Removal and What's Underneath
Tile removal is often part of the scope on renovation projects. Removing existing tile typically reveals the condition of the substrate. In older bathrooms, this sometimes surfaces moisture damage that wasn't visible from the surface. This is expected. We assess what's there and address it before new tile goes down.
Large-format tile installation requires experience with leveling systems to prevent lippage, where tiles sit at slightly different heights. It's one of the more common tile installation failures and difficult to repair without starting over. We work to prevent it during installation rather than address it after the fact.
